Most-Expensive-Hermes-Birkin-Ever

Another day, another Birkin sold for an astronomical price. This time it’s a 35cm 2008 bag in cherry red “Braise” crocodile skin with 18-karat white gold and hardware that’s embellished with diamonds that sold for the princely sum of $298,000. This bag has already changed hands twice with each owner probably making a hefty profit since it was purchased from Hermes for just $160,000.

This time, it was sold by Privé Porter to an anonymous buyer (for a named price) from Los Angeles. Effectively smashing the previous record held by a very similar bag.

“Even with the sheer volume of Birkins we’re offered daily, we are very careful about the bags we actually buy. Is the color special? When was it produced? How rare is it? But we knew that when we had the opportunity to acquire this Braise Croc, we’d stumbled upon one of the special Birkins, the way a horse trainer may see a newborn and know that’s a Triple Crown winner someday. We hoped to sell it to someone who appreciated the bag as much as we do, and from what we understand, the buyer is a very sophisticated collector who genuinely understands how special and rare this bag is. Which is reflected in their willingness to pay the record price,” Privé Porter co-found and Managing Director Jeffrey Berk told PurseBlog.

New Record Set for Most Expensive Birkin Sold

Categories:Other Brands

It feels like just yesterday we reported the news of the most expensive Hermes Birkin sold, but it seems the stakes keep getting higher!

WSJ Christina Binkley reports today that a rare Hermes Birkin with diamonds has sold for $298,000, breaking the previous Christies record of $222,000.

If you are wondering just what kind of handbag could command a price tag that high… “a rare Hermès 35cm Birkin shiny porosus crocodile bag in a fire-engine red called ‘braise’ manufactured in France in 2008. Its hardware features 10.08 carats of round brilliant-cut diamonds in 171 grams of 18K white gold” writes Binkley.

The bag had been bought and resold twice since it’s original purchase for $160,000 from the Hermes mothership in NYC. The bag was finally sold by Jeffrey Berk of Privé Porter to a Los Angelos representative for an unknown investor.

Let’s be realistic here, not all of our ordinary Birkin bags are going to sell for double. In fact, the reseller market prices for the elusive Jane B’s are definitely down. But this sale reinforces the idealthat Hermes bags are likely the only ones that can be justified as investments in the long run (read:Gold, S&P 500, or Hermes Birkin?).

In a video interview, Binkley and Tanya Rivero discuss the record-setting Birkin and continue the debate whether handbags should be investment-worthy pieces.

$298,000 Hermès Birkin Shatters World Record for Most Expensive Handbag Sale

Categories:Other Brands

It was just last June that we reported to you about a new high in handbag resale prices: Christie’s Hong Kong had just sold a pink crocodile Hermès Birkin for a record high of $221,000. That record didn’t even make its first anniversary; earlier this week, Privé Porter announced it had broken that record with a $298,000 Birkin of its own, and it’s one that will look familiar to PurseBlog readers.

Privé Porter is a resale business that focuses on unused (but previously owned) Birkins and operates primarily via Instagram, where it’s able to reach a worldwide audience of shoppers looking to add rare handbags to their collections. In November, Privé Porter hosted a pop-up Birkin yacht at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and Megs and Vlad were among the attendees who got to peruse the collectible Birkins. The new record-breaker was among the bags in the selection, and it appears in our photos of the event, including the one above.

The bag is a 35cm Birkin in Braise shiny Porosus crocodile, finished with 18-karat white gold encrusted with pavé diamonds, at a total weight of more than ten carats. It was manufactured in 2008 and sold to a US buyer via the brand’s New York City flagship on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Privé Porter acquired the unused bag from the original owner in 2015, and it was purchased from the company by a Los Angeles-based buyer who chose to remain anonymous. The Christie’s bag can still technically claim the title of the most expensive handbag sold at auction; this Birkin sold at a named price with no bidding.

We spoke to Privé Porter co-found and Managing Director Jeffrey Berk, who had this to say of the bag and its sourcing process: “Even with the sheer volume of Birkins we’re offered daily, we are very careful about the bags we actually buy. Which is reflected in their willingness to pay the record price.”

Hermès reds and pinks are particularly sought-after shades for collectors; a Rouge H (which is a bit deeper than braise) Birkin set a sales record of over $203,000 back in 2011 via Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, and the most recent record holder from Christie’s in Hong Kong was bright pink. Recently, handbag resellers have been trying to convince the buying public that Birkins are a better investment than stocks or gold bars, and if you’ve got a red or pink croc Birkin at the ready, that just might be true.

This Tote is Louis Vuitton’s Most Expensive Leather Handbag Ever

Categories:Louis Vuitton

Louis-Vuitton-Crocodile-City-Steamer-Bag

During my most recent perusal of Louis Vuitton’s new arrivals on the brand’s website, I came across something that shocked even me: a crocodile version of the beautiful new Louis Vuitton City Steamer Bag, retailing for a mind-boggling $55,500. I have a couple questions, including, why couldn’t they leave off the $500 and make it a nice, round number?

My other major question was whether or not this is Louis Vuitton’s most expensive handbag of all time, and according to my research, it’s not. The Richest counts two special edition Louis Vuitton minaudieres at more than $100,000 apiece, but neither was made out of traditional handbag materials, so that seems like cheating. When you narrow the list down to regular handbags, the most expensive representative of which I can find record is the Dora PM in crocodile, which is close (but no cigar) at $50,000 currently; the most expensive previous version of the bag was $54,500. This bag, in my humble opinion, is leaps and bounds more beautiful than that one.

With that in mind, I’m comfortable declaring this bag the brand’s most expensive leather offering of all time, and for the most powerful luxury brand in the world, that’s worth noting. Louis Vuitton has been ramping up its leather and exotic offerings for years in an effort to charm the world’s wealthiest shoppers, and it seems clear this model is meant to compete head-on with the ultra-rare, ultra-expensive exotic versions of the Hermès Birkin. Someone had to take on that iconic bag eventually, and there’s perhaps no one more qualified than Nicolas Ghesquiere at Louis Vuitton.

Check out the bag for yourself at Louis Vuitton; to purchase, you’ll have to have your people call their people.
